“My lifelong interest in science and my desire to help other people led me to a career in medicine, but it was being good with my hands and enjoying the challenges and rewards of solving complex problems that made me specialize in orthopaedic surgery.
“After finishing my internship and residency, I had the privilege of completing a fellowship in South Africa before returning to my native state of Indiana to practice medicine.
“As a physician, I always try to put myself in the place of the patient or his or her family members so I can understand their fears and concerns. This leads to very personalized care and gives me the ability to truly say, ‘This is what I would recommend for a member of my own family.’
“I feel deeply responsible for my patients’ recoveries. After all, they are trusting me with their health and well-being, and I take that very seriously. That’s why I think it’s so important to maintain the highest level of expertise. I’m very proud of the fact that I was instrumental in improving the standard of orthopaedic care at Community Hospital. In addition, I helped pioneer a minimally invasive anterior lateral approach to total hip replacement surgery that improves the recovery process.
“Being a physician has given me a much greater understanding of human nature, and that has enriched my life. At some point, I would like to return to Africa and work as an orthopaedic surgeon there.”
